He's an IT technician by day and DJ by night, but now Jamie Lakes is also set to appear on the main stage at the Harrow Festival. The 26-year-old from Watford has been DJing on the side for about ten years and we caught up with him to find out a little more.
Can you tell me about your set at the Harrow Festival?
My set is during the day, I will be providing the music in between bands and performances.
How did you put it together?
Every set I do is made up on the spot, get there, see what the crowd respond to and go with that.
Where do you rehearse?
I can’t say I’ve ever rehearsed a set.
How would you describe your music?
The majority of music I play is commercial and/or remixes of commercial songs.
How did you get into DJing?
I used to volunteer at a music studio when I was 14, when it wasn’t booked out for someone they let me use it for free.
What have you learnt most about being a musician?
Not much in the way of music, but on a personal level it has helped me grow as a person and become more confident.
Do you have a day job? If so, can you tell me what you all do?
I run my own business during the day, Gopher IT Support, we help small businesses and sole traders with their IT. So they can concentrate on running their business.
Can you tell me some background information about yourself – where did you grow up, what school did you go to?
I’ve grown up in Watford and have remained here so far, I went to a small school in Harpenden, there were about 20 pupils in our year.
Are there any artists who inspired you?
There are a lot of artists that inspire me, but over the last few years I’ve found myself becoming more and more into blues, there are too many artists to name.
What musical instruments can you play?
Growing up I learnt a variety of instruments, guitar and drums to name two, I haven’t continued with them, though.
What do you have in the pipeline after Harrow Festival?
As a resident DJ, I would continue my usual residencies, Friday at Tiger Tiger, Haymarket and Saturday at Hydeout in Watford.
Byron Park, Harrow, HA3 7QX, Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4. Details: 07412 224446, harrowfestival.co.uk
