Brent taxpayers are to be landed with an unexpected bill of £609,000, according to Brent Borough Council’s Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dem group claims that taxpayers will have to foot the bill to bail out the West London Waste Authority which has a multi-million pound hole in its budget.

The bill is the equivalent of an extra £6 for every household in the borough.

The Liberal Democrats believe the waste authority's financial problems will end up hitting Brent residents twice as some have already had to pay to dispose of domestic rubbish at Abbey Road re-use and recycling centres.

Councillor Barry Cheese, who raised the issue of charges at a council meeting on Monday, said: “Brent residents have been hit twice over because of the waste authority’s financial mess.

“Firstly they had to pay to get rid of their DIY waste at the tip, and now they are being landed with this massive bill.

“I’m angry to think that this money could otherwise have been used to keep libraries open or clear leaves from our streets.”

The West London Waste Authority is a government-run organisation which is responsible for the disposal of waste from the West London boroughs.

The Harrow Times is awaiting a comment from Brent Council.
