Harrow Asian Deaf Club has won an award for the work it does to make local services more accessible to deaf people.
The club, which is based in the Bentley Day Centre, in Uxbridge Road, was told yesterday that it had won Breakthrough’s Independent Living Award 2012 in the Accessible Communities category.
The date of the announcement was significant as yesterday was the UN’s International Day of Disabled People.
Asif Iqbal, president of Harrow Asian Deaf Club, said: “We were shocked when we were informed of the news.
“It is fantastic news to celebrate on the International Day of Disabled people.
“It is wonderful to be recognised for our work with both deaf and hearing people, enabling them to be involved in our Deaf Club as well as empowering our deaf members to access to local services.
“We are all about bringing the communities together and ensuring services are accessible for all.”
Breakthrough UK is a charity which aims to promote the rights of disabled people.
