A group of six sixth formers have teamed up in an attempt to raise £3,000 for charity.

The Year 12 students from Bentley Wood High School, in Bridges Road, Stanmore, are taking part in the Wings of Hope Achievement Award.

Sumayyah Akhtar, 16, Ladan Yusuf, 16, Sarah Hussain, 17, Samar Mohammed, 17, Haseena Wazir, 17 and Christina Lewis, 17, will compete against hundreds of other teams across the country.

The competitors are required to organise fundraising events to raise money for Wings of Hope, a charity which sponsors children in India and Malawi to receive a free education.

Prizes will be awarded in March based on the creativity, innovation and teamwork displayed by the groups.

The semi finals of the competition will be held at the House of Lords and the final award ceremony will take place at Wembley Stadium.

The winners will receive prizes including an all expenses paid trip to Africa and internships.

So far the Stanmore students have raised £280 by holding two cake sales.

They are also planning a teacher talent show, a pancake sale and collections at tube stations and in shops.

Sumayyah Akhtar said: “Our team leader heard about Wings of Hope and liked the idea so we decided to get involved.

“So many of us take advantage of education and we want to be part of helping provide free education.”

She added: “It would mean a lot to us to win.

“It would be our hard work paying off and to see it firsthand would be amazing.”
