A candlelit vigil and prayers were held at Harrow Civic Centre on Friday in memory of a young woman who was gang raped and murdered in India.
The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor for Harrow, Councillor Nana Asante, and by the retiring Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Dal Babu.
It was organised by Councillor Kairul Kareema Marikar and Councillor Krishna Suresh.
Harrow Borough Council’s portfolio holder for community and cultural services, Councillor David Perry, said: “I am proud of the efforts we took to raise awareness of this issue.
“It was a sad occasion that brought everyone together, but we also celebrated the fact that we care.
“These acts of violence against women happen in every country and in every community, and with our actions we want to send a clear message that they should not be tolerated.”
The victim, a medical student, was gang raped on a bus in Delhi on December 16.
She subsequently died of her injuries on December 29.
