A 39-year-old has been jailed for three years for burglary.

Lewis Antony Williams, of no fixed address, was jailed at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday.

He pleaded not guilty to the attempted burglary of a home in Edgware and to the burglary of a shop in Mill Hill.

On August 8, 2012, Williams tried to enter a house on Watling Avenue, Edgware.

The teenage occupier of the house was at home at the time and heard a noise from the kitchen.

He went to investigate and found Williams forcing his way through the kitchen window.

The victim locked himself in his bedroom and called for help.

At that moment the landlord arrived at the house and started filming Williams on his mobile phone.

Police were called but Williams escaped before they arrived.

However, he was identified from the film and was arrested on August 11.

He told police that he had been trying to visit a friend in Watling Avenue but that he had got the wrong address.

The burglary of the shop in Mill Hill took place on June 12, 2012.

He stole shelving work £1,400 and £200 of stock.

Detective Superintendent Mark Strugnell of Barnet Police said “To come face to face with someone forcing their way into your home is a frightening ordeal.

“Thankfully the victim’s landlord had the courage and presence of mind to intervene and record Williams actually committing the crime.

“Coupled with the CCTV evidence from the shop burglary, we were provided with compelling evidence to prove his guilt.

“Williams is a persistent burglar and his sentence is entirely appropriate.”
