Parents of pupils at a girls school due to close and merge with another have raised conderns over the proposals.

Last week it was announced Heathfield School for Girls, in Beaulieu Drive, Pinner, would close and merge with Northwood College, in Hillingdon, in September 2014.

Parents have raised concerns including the extra fees they may have to pay, the travel to the Northwood site and the standards of teaching.

There has also been anger at the fact parents would have to buy a new school uniform for the combined school, just after Heathfield brought in a new design for this school year.

Helen Eaton’s daughter has gone to the school since Year 7 and has just enrolled in its sixth form.

She said: “None of the parents feel they have been treated fairly. We were not given any notice of the plans whatsoever and we were just in shock when it was announced.

“My daughter signed up to sixth form because we believed the school would be there for the two years and have the same teachers during her A levels. But she will not have that when the schools merge.

“There has been no consultation with parents about the plans and we are just being told what is going to happen. It is not fair.”

A spokeswoman for the Girls’ Day School Trust said: “We shared the news with Heathfield staff, parents and girls at the earliest opportunity.

“There is simply never a good time to share this sort of news, and we thought it would be better to do so as early as possible in the academic year, rather than delay it until later in the term.

“We will, of course, consult parents, girls and staff on how we can take the best of both schools forward to make an outstanding school.

“We recognise that this is a difficult period for staff, and will be doing everything we can to support them through it.

“We know that our staff are very professional, and that they will always put the best interests of the girls first.”

The spokeswoman said the trust would be working with both schools over a new curriculum, and a staffing plan would be agreed after that.

The trust has also said it will reimburse families who have already bought a new uniform, as a goodwill gesture.

In regards to the school site in Beaulieu Drive, the GDST will review the use of the buildings at the end of 2014 and it is likely it will sell the building and reinvest the money into other facilities.
