The chaplain of an iconic public school says a quiz to find Harrow's smartest will help pupils learn about mental health.

Harrow School is preparing to host the MasterMind competition, run by mental health charity Mind in Harrow in partnership with the Harrow Times.

It is one of six schools pitting their Year 9 pupils against each other to face the quick fire ‘University Challenge’ quiz.

Rev Father Power, of Harrow School, said: “The school is always keen to support local charities but a particularly good relationship has been forged with Mind in Harrow.

“Mental health is an issue which does not always attract a high degree of exposure and the charities working to support those who have mental health issues often find it a struggle to make their voice heard.

“From an educational perspective, it is important to raise the profile of mental health in the minds of young people, and to encourage them to understand the issues in the context of their overall health and well being.”

But before the quiz next year, each team of four Year 9 pupils must raise £400 for the charity, by any means they like, to enter the contest.

The six schools taking part are Hatch End High School, Bentley Wood High School, Harrow School, Sacred Heart, John Lyon School and North London Collegiate School.

At Harrow the final membership of the teams will depend on the outcome of the school’s own inter-house quiz competition which they hope will be the perfect practice before the competition.

Father Power added: “We are very much looking forward to hosting the event and to continue our association with MIND in Harrow.”
