A new support group has started to help children of those who are in prison or have offended.
The group, launched by Harrow Borough Council, will give more support to children with a parent of other family member in prison.
Sessions for the group will be run by the council’s children centres every two weeks and will offer activities for families and a chance for them to talk with staff about what they are going through.
According to figures from the council, children with a parent in prison are twice as likely to suffer from mental health issues as their peers.
Cabinet member for children Janet Mote said: "These groups will be a vital source of support for children who are struggling in silence.
“There is often no formal process for identifying someone who has a parent in prison – there is no box to tick on any form, and families may not want to ask for help, or know that there is help available.”
Sessions will be held at Hillview Children’s Centre, Grange Road, South Harrow, and upcoming dates for the meetings can be found here.
