Multi-million pound plans to build two “urgently needed” doctors surgeries have been approved to cope with an influx of new patients.
The empty patch of land opposite Harrod Court, in Stag Lane, Kingsbury, will be transformed into a unique new centre which will also include a pharmacy and 11 new flats.
Fryent Way Medical Centre and the Willow Tree Doctors Surgery, which operate from small houses in Kingsbury Road, will relocate to new centre to accommodate new people moving into the area.
Earlier this year, Brent Council also approved plans to build 183 new houses and a new restaurant area creating 800 new jobs at the former Oriental City site in Edgware Road, Colindale.
Helen Evans, chief executive of Network Housing Group, said: “We are pleased to announce our first collaboration with GPI, who are one of the most experienced healthcare developers in the industry.
“As a result of working closely with Brent Council and our partners we have been able to create an excellent scheme which correctly identifies and addresses the local need, easing the current pressure on local services.”
The £3.5million project will be led by social housing provider Network Housing Group and primary care developer General Practice Investment Corporation Limited.
It has been partly paid for by the Greater London Authority and the National Health Service and will also feature a new pharmacy.
Neighbours have praised the proposals, with one saying: “The large scale housing developments in the immediate locality have already brought in many thousands of extra residents who all need access to GP and health centre services.
“This new centre will accommodate surgently needed provisions.
“It would be foolhardy in the extreme to let this golden opportunity pass.”
The 11 flats are expected to be completed by winter 2014 and the medical centre’s will be built by summer 2015.
They will be one, two and three bedroom apartments for shared ownership, and priority will be given to social tenants, military staff, people on the housing register and first-time buyers.
William Sheardown, group development director at GPI, said: “By working closely with Network, Brent Council, The GP Practices and the wider NHS we feel this scheme delivers a solution with great benefits for Kingsbury and its residents and patients.”
