A care home indulged its residents’ sweet tooth when it organised a cake sale for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Staff at Knights Court Nursing Home in High Street, Edgware, will donate the proceeds to one of the charities providing disaster relief in the Philippines.

Tarts, cupcakes, sponges, fruit and lemonade were served along with Filipino dishes like Yam pastry, C2 drinks and butter sandwich cream crackers.

Filipino music was also played in the background at the sale.

The typhoon has claimed 5,200 lives and has affected 11 million people in the Philippines.

Staff member Denise Levy, “It’s been a very busy few weeks , making the cakes, printing the flyers. I’m just exhausted.

“Hopefully we will have raised a lot of money.”

The home has a large number of Filipino workers and carer assistant Riza Sumagang’s three children were affected by the typhoon at their home in Bohol.

She said: “It’s a tragic experience for them. I was panicking because we had no phone signals. I found out through mutual friends on Facebook what’s going on.”

Her colleague Mari Lou Morales took heart from the event. She said: “I’m so positive; I cannot describe this kind of compassion to you. The UK has given us so much help and there are many countries all over the world still wanting to help us.”

Relief manager Nicky Barry praised the Filipino staff. “They’re a good bunch of people; they’re just good staff.”
