The president and founder of Harrow’s Asian Deaf Club has been recognised for his leadership in the community.
Asif Iqbal won the ‘Achievement Through Adversity’ award a glitzy awards ceremony organised by ethnic awards organisers GG2 and attended by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.
Mr Iqbal was born profoundly deaf but, despite his disability, went on to form the Harrow Asian Deaf Club and became the first deaf person to take part in the London Mayor’s New Year’s Day Parade.
His work for deaf people and organisations in the community was recognised at the awards ceremony last week.
He said: “I am so shocked, I didn’t expect to win. I hope the award inspires and influences the younger generation. This award raises awareness for the deaf community.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the entire community to come together. It’s important to show that deaf people can be leaders as well.”
