Voluntary carers in Harrow were shown appreciation at a special event.

More than 100 people turned out to St Peter’s Church, in Sumner Road, for the event, held by Harrow Borough Council to provide advice and support to some of Harrow’s home carers.

Many of those who attended care for relatives or members of the community who are elderly or unwell.

A quiz was organised and representatives from the police, council and other agencies set up information stalls.

Allie Bruce, a care lead officer at Harrow Council, explained why the events are important.

She said: “It is invaluable that they know their work is recognised and to give them information on how to get support when they need it.

“A lot of carers don’t see themselves as carers but some do need support and, if they don’t get it, it can be detrimental to their health and that of the person they’re caring for.

“These events are about empowering carers and letting them know what’s out there so they can continue their vital roles for as long as possible. This year was fantastic and was our biggest turnout ever."
