Cllr Stanley Sheinwald’s letter “Please support parking battle’ Your Views, May 15) referred to a meeting between myself and St Anselm’s Church, which he refused to attend, so please take his fly-on-the-wall account with a bucket of salt.
At the meeting I stressed Harrow Borough Council would do everything it could to help the church mitigate the impact of the controlled parking zone (CPZ), particularly around arrangements for weddings and funerals.
We work with many other churches and temples within CPZs to resolve such issues and St Anselm’s does at least have a public car park just a couple of minutes away.
Cllr Sheinwald has deliberately curtailed the advice that was given to make it more sensational. Our administration did not actually instigate this CPZ, but I gave the church my word that we would review it after six to nine months.
The council only puts CPZs in roads where the majority of residents want them, so if there is a reversal of resident opinion on this CPZ we would of course look at it again.
I genuinely understand the concerns St Anselm’s; it’s a lovely building with a hard-working team of good people looking after it. So it’s a shame that Cllr Sheinwald has offered a distorted and second-hand account of our meeting for his own political ends.
Cllr Susan Hall
Leader of Harrow Borough Council
