The Prime Minister claims the Conservative Party are the only ones with a ‘plan’ for providing more homes for Harrow.
In a visit to the Aura site, owned by Weston Homes, in Edgware this morning, David Cameron joined parliamentary candidates for Harrow East and West Bob Blackman and Hannah David for a tour of the flats and town houses being built.
See our video of the visit below.
While more than half the purchasers at Aura have been first-time buyers, 21 per cent of these have benefited from the Government’s 'help to buy' initiative.
In addition to this, 12 per cent of homes on the site will go to a housing association to provide homes for people on low incomes or requiring housing subsidy.
Speaking to the Harrow Times, Mr Cameron said: “What we need is to build more homes and with that more affordable homes and I think we’re the only ones who have really worked out a plan.
“We’ve reformed the planning system, getting rid of thousands of pages of regulations, and we’ve got the help to buy scheme – which if you talk to the builders on this site has transformed the building industry - helping young Londoners who have got a good job but can’t necessarily afford a deposit to get on the housing ladder.”
He also added that the Conservatives have pledged to build 200,000 starter homes for those under the age of 40 along with introducing the help to buy ISA, which will give back £50 for every £200 saved.
Housing association tenants will also be given the same discounts as council tenants, under a new scheme announced yesterday.
He added: “All those things, combined with the money that is already in the budget for affordable homes, I think will mean we will really get on in building these houses and help people achieve their dream of owning their own home.”
The trio were joined by site staff for the tour, where they were shown the stages of construction and plans for the development.
