A Harrow-based project which helps young people in emotional distress has been featured on national television.
The Wish Centre, which provides self-harm, sexual and domestic violence support and recovery for young people, appeared in BBC1's Lets Play Darts For Sport Relief on Sunday, February 28.
TV presenter Anita Rani went to visit the Sport Relief funded project where she met Isobel, 19, from Harrow who started self-harming when she was 11 years old.
Isobel said: "It just started off with a pair of scissors at break time but by the time I was in secondary school I would be self-harming every day.
"I remember hitting rock bottom when I felt like it was all too much.
"I was terrified because I knew I was prepared to take that step further.
"In my mind I was telling myself that I didn’t want to live on this earth and I nearly took the decision to act upon that and you are taking your own life."
Through regular counselling and mentoring at The Wish Centre, Isobel is now well on the way to recovery.
As an experienced organisation with links to other young people services, the centre has used a grant from Sport Relief to extend their existing services into the London boroughs of Harrow, Merton and Brent.
The project is now able to help young people in all three boroughs to stop self-harm, overcome past trauma and increase their emotional well-being.
Ms Rani said £10 could enable a vulnerable young woman just like Isobel who is self-harming to attend a support group and £15 could pay for a young person with mental health issues to go on a trip with a mentor, helping to get them out of the house and build their self-confidence.
The BBC1 programme showed sporting legends Mike Tindall and Robbie Savage, comedians Greg Davies, Katherine Ryan and Jon Richardson, wildlife television presenter Kate Humble, Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan Stephens and comedian Tim Vine team up with superstar darts players and compete for the title of Let’s Play Darts for Sport Relief Champions 2016.
People can still enter the Sport Relief Games which take place from Friday, March 18, to Sunday, March 20. Find out more at www.sportrelief.com.
