Tonic Choir has reached a high note as it celebrates seven years with seven concerts for seven charitable causes.

The choir, which regularly performs in Harrow, was set up in 2009 by musical directors Philip Barnett and Bryan Kesselman. The pair, who had their first meeting in Elliott Hall at Harrow Arts Centre, wanted to create the choir as a place where people can come and have fun through singing.

"The original plan was to attract 30 people," says Philip. "But on the first evening 120 people turned up. So over the years we had added Tonics Two, Three, Four as well as Tonic Extra and now have almost 300 members and still welcome new members."

The 64-year-old adds: "One of the aims of Tonic Choir has always been to perform in interesting places. Over the years we have sung at Blenheim Palace, The RAF Museum in Hendon, The Roundhouse, The Royal Festival Hall and Bentley Priory.

"Another important element for us is working with children. The Tonic Choir age range is mostly 50 to 70, although we do cover from 30 to 90. In September 2014 we joined with Grimsdyke School (Hatch End) to celebrate their 75th anniversary, which was very exciting."

The choirs are based in Hatch End, Radlett and Totteridge and usually meet on a weekly basis.

"The most exciting discovery we have made in the past seven years has been the health and social benefits reported by our members," explains Philip. "It is clear that regular singing in a relaxed and fun environment does great things for physical health and state of mind.

"Tonic members report many positive changes to their lives through our weekly singing sessions. This has been the greatest achievement of Tonic Choir and so to mark our seventh year, we have set out to give seven concerts while supporting seven good causes."

So far Tonic Choir has raised funds for Alzheimer's Society through their concert on Monday. Last night (Wednesday), they raised money for Homeless Action in Barnet through a bucket collection.

On March 13, Tonic One and Two will be performing at the Harrow Arts Centre along with Harrow Youth Choir and children from St John's Church of England School in Stanmore to raise vital funds to keep the art centre going after the council cut all its funding.

Later this month, Tonic Four will be raising funds for Parkinson's UK at a concert in Totteridge (March 20).
