It is called The Chicken Society, but I suggest you try the duck.
This is not a slight on the chicken, but when the main course option is one or the other you simply have to try the duck.
Located where you once found The Dignity in Finchley Central, the owners decided to completely overhaul the business in the name of birds.
If, like me, the old pub was a favourite then try not to be too dismayed, The Chicken Society is doing well to stand out from its shadow.
With a newly industrially designed interior adorned with trendy neon lights and booths all around, it is a great place for dinner with friends, family or a date and still has a top notch booze offering to keep you both fed and watered.
The Camden Brewery is on tap offering lager, pale ale and whiter beer with a varied selection of cans from various brands.
A rather unique collection of cocktails for only £6.50 each, including my new favourite, a Blood Orange Paloma with tequila, blood orange liqueur, lime and grapefruit Ting.
I would recommend starting with chicken, the boneless buttermilk bites were a gorgeously light and sticky starter (£5), perfect for sharing if you also want to get the seeded breadsticks with smashed avocado and lime (£3).
Now to that duck: it slips apart as you cut into it and is so delicately soft in texture with powerful flavours it simply can’t be missed. Much larger in size than its counterpart, for a hearty portion I would go for just a quarter (£7, £12 for half, £23 for the whole) whereas you would probably need half the chicken (£9, £5.50 for quarter and £17 for the whole).
For the sides which, I must confess, my companion and I tried four of. I would recommend the mac and cheese (£5), cooked with smoked cheddar and crispy on top I had to ask the waiter to take it away as no matter how full I was I couldn’t stop picking at it.
The spiralised and fried courgetti (£5) was something I hadn’t come across before – for those not in the know, spiralised food is the turning of it, usually vegetables, into noodles or ribbons. So courgetti is noodles of courgettes, in this case deep fried. For something a little lighter, is the lemon and pomegranate grain salad (£5) was fresh and aromatic, with a nice crunch to mix up the textures on the table.
For dessert they have a changing brownie selection which happened to be sitting alongside my table so I looked forward to it throughout my meal and it did not disappoint. It comes accompanied by a selection of ice cream including chocolate, vanilla, pistachio and raspberry (£5 or £2.50 for ice cream only).
