People are being warned to be vigilant while attending Diwali firework displays this weekend after 13 homes were burgled in one night.
Harrow MPS believe a combination of dark nights and firework displays may have resulted in the spike of thieves targeting empty homes across the borough last night.
A spokesperson said: “We often see a spike in residential burglaries this time of year as the nights get darker earlier and there are lots of fireworks going off.
“Burglars target empty looking houses and the fireworks often mask any noises they make.
“We ask the residents of Harrow to always call police should they see any suspicious activity and have extra anti burglary patrols in place.”
London Metropolitan Police are also launching Operation Bumblebee this week in a bid to crack down on the numbers of houses being burgled during the winter months.
People are advised to:
- Ensure doors and windows are properly locked with a key when leaving home.
- Keep valuables out of sight and out of reach.
- Lock side gates and store bins behind them.
- Avoid leaving packaging outside, which indicates you have expensive new items in your home, especially around Christmas time.
