Even from the outside, the West End theatre currently housing the musical Wicked makes clear that this is a show unlike any other. The building is lit with streaks of emerald green light, and a glimpse inside the foyer reveals a glowing green interior. Stepping inside the Apollo Victoria Theatre, it's immediately clear from the mechanical dragon perched above the stage, that this is not your average musical.
Wicked is a riot of colour and fantasy; the clever, funny and touching story of how the characters of The Wizard of Oz came to be. Although often described as a prequel, the story actually takes place before, simultaneously and after the Oz tale. Those familiar with the story will delight in the clever twists on well-known characters, while those who have never seen the film or read L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will find much to love in this effortlessly charming and engrossing story.
Wicked is the ninth longest running musical in West End history, having opened in London in 2006, and has won over 100 major international awards, including two Olivier Awards. It has also been voted as best West End show by theatregoers on three separate occasions at the annual WhatsOnStage Awards.
Wicked is stuffed full of surprises, fantastic songs and incredible performances from start to finish. If you're a musical theatre fan and have yet to experience the show, it's about time you started your journey down the yellow brick road.
Tickets for Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre are currently on sale to Saturday, May 23, 2020.
