New fire doors will be installed in more than 400 flats across Harrow in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
It is the latest move in response to the disaster in 2017 which has forced local authorities to review fire safety measures across the housing sector.
A total of 411 flats across 31 housing blocks in the borough will benefit from this latest upgrade, which are part of a £2.4 million improvement scheme.
The new flat doors will be at FD30 standard, which offer a minimum of 30 minutes protection from smoke and fire.
Cllr Philip O’Dell, responsible for housing at Harrow Council, explained that it would offer up the contract to the open market to “invite competition and speed up the overall process”.
He previously championed the council’s “multi-faceted approach to fire safety” which he described as “necessary” following Grenfell.
The programme will run in conjunction with the council’s plans to install new fire doors across its multi-storey housing blocks.
Earlier this year, its cabinet approved a scheme to replace doors across all three-storey blocks, following on from a programme targeting those of four storeys.
Cllr Graham Henson, leader of Harrow Council, welcomed the “better protection” this will provide to many of the borough’s residents.
