A woman has died after she was hit by a car just one day before she was due to celebrate her 62nd birthday.

Vimla Matai was stuck by a silver Peugeot as the walked along Woodcock Hill in Kenton on Tuesday (January 19).

The Metropolitan Police say they were called to reports of a car in collision with a pedestrian at around 5.40pm, and officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service.

Despite the efforts of the paramedics, Mrs Matai died at the scene at 6.02pm.

Her next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Peugeot 308 involved in the collision was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drunk driving and driving with no insurance.

The 27-year-old man was taken to a north police station where he was interviewed and released on bail to a date in mid-February.

Police investigators are now attempting to piece together the circumstances that led up to the fatal collision.

Detective Sergeant Chris Martin of the serious collision investigation unit said: "This was a tragic incident that has taken the life of a woman who should have been celebrating her sixty-second birthday on Wednesday.

"I urge witnesses and anyone who has footage of the events leading up to, during or immediately following the collision, to contact police immediately.

"No matter how insignificant you think your information may be, please get in touch without delay."
