Two people were arrested following a blaze that broke out at a golf club house.
On June 29, 2020, the former Stanmore and Edgware Golf Centre in Brockley Hill was alight, with ten fire engines and 70 firefighters called to the scene.
The clubhouse and part of a driving range, situated between Stanmore and Elstree closed with immediate effect in October 2019.
Fire crews were called shortly before 1am, and the blaze was under control by 2.40am that day.
Crews witnessed flames ripping quickly through the two-storey clubhouse and spreading to the driving range.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed on March 17 this year, two men – aged 32 and 57 – were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and fraud.
Both were released under investigation, and enquiries into the circumstances continue by detectives from the North West Command Unit CID.
The London Fire brigade said there were no reports of any injuries from the fire.
Station Commander Neil Guyett, who was at the scene, said: "On arrival crews were faced with a well-developed fire, rapidly spreading through the building.
"Firefighters worked hard to bring the fire under control.
"There was a large amount of smoke in the area, so local residents and businesses were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.”
The golf centre, which was open for nearly 25 years previously announced its closure with immediate effect in October 2019.
They wrote: “There are new owners of the freehold and despite positive negotiations, belief in assurances given that the centre would be allowed to continue to operate and terms agreed, we have now been informed that this will not now happen and with the lease being terminated, the centre has had to close.”
Investigations into the fire continues.
