Almost 200 new homes could be built on the site of a town centre car park.
Housing association Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) intends to submit a planning application to Harrow Council for 196 flats behind Lidl in Stanmore.
It hopes to build on the site of the former council daycare facility known as Anmer Lodge, which has since been turned into a temporary car park.
The site was sold to NHG in 2015 and was initially earmarked for 120 new homes alongside a Marks & Spencer Simply Foods store.
These plans have since collapsed, prompting the housing association to look at new ways to redevelop the space.
Under the new scheme, the flats would be built in blocks up to eight storeys high, while just over a third of the homes sold as affordable.
While the temporary car parking spaces would be lost, the developers said the car park serving Lidl would be maintained.
NHG said the proposals will “maximise the potential of a vacant and underutilised brownfield site in the heart of Stanmore”.
Addressing any concerns around the impact on parking and traffic in the area, it added residents would be encouraged to make use of public transport.
Access to the former Anmer Lodge site has been a key point of contention for residents and local councillors in the past as it is served by several narrow lanes.
Developers are consulting with local residents before submitting the application to the council, which they expect to put forward by spring 2022.
If the plans are approved, it anticipates building would start later that year, with the first residents moving in during summer 2024.
