A Brent school could be moved out of special measures after it made a series of leadership changes, following a damning inspection report last year.
Ofsted inspectors found clear improvements at JFS, a Jewish secondary school in Kenton, during a follow-up visit at the end of 2021.
It came after the school was rated ‘inadequate’ and placed on special measures following reports of “sexual bullying” and “sexual harassment” among pupils and inaction in response from teachers.
There were concerns around a lack of learning about respect and consent, LGBT issues and healthy relationships.
In the initial report, published in June, inspectors found personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) classes at JFS were “not fit for purpose”.
They said it meant pupils were “not adequately prepared for modern life in Britain”.
There were also frequent reports of students, particularly boys, being “disrespectful”, while those with special educational needs were not always given the right support.
However, it was acknowledged that pupils generally performed well academically.
Following the report, the school made a raft of leadership changes, including replacing the headteacher.
Inspectors noted this has created a “greater sense of stability for staff and pupils” and, if things continue, it is on the right track to move out of special measures.
The school has taken on consultancy advice regarding its safeguarding and has introduced regular training for staff on how best to approach this issue.
According to the report, it has made a commitment to tackling concerns around sexual harassment.
This has included a school-wide survey, in which around 500 pupils took part and their responses are shaping how to move forward.
The school has introduced a new support scheme, with Year 10 pupils “buddying up” with those in Year 7 and dozens of sixth-form students signing up for mental health training.
It has also revised its PSHE programme, with greater focus on protected characteristics, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships.
JFS has been contacted for comment on both reports.
