People living in a Harrow neighbourhood have urged their council to fix a series of faulty road signs, with fears drivers will not be able to see where they are.
The printing on several street signs – many of them in the Headstone area – has faded away completely, while others are difficult to read or are at risk of falling off.
At least one sign appears to have been printed with two different street names, which means it is illegible and could be confusing for drivers and pedestrians.
The issue was brought up by Samantha Pali on local community Facebook group Fixit Harrow Network, where she suggested it showed a lack of “quality or pride” in the area.
She added it could lead to accidents, noting that at least one safety warning sign was “not clear”. Others said it was important to have proper signs to ensure emergency services can get to the right place.
One resident explained she sometimes takes matters into her own hands when it comes to faulty street signs. She said she cleans those which are dirty and will use a black marker pen to go over the lettering if it isn’t clear.
According to Harrow Council, anyone concerned about the state of road signs in the borough should report them via its website. It explained that all signs are regularly reviewed and will be replaced where necessary.
A Harrow Council spokesperson said: “Inspections are carried out three times a year for defects acted upon when residents report these to us. While we thank them for making us aware of these street signs in the Headstone ward, we have not had these reported to us through the official channels that would have prompted an inspection to repair or replace them, however we will inspect these signs.
Residents are strongly encouraged to report these issues via the council website.”
