There are no indications that plans for far-right disruption circulating on social media is going ahead, an MP has claimed.

Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has urged residents to “remain calm” following reports of demonstrations set to take place in Harrow on Wednesday (August 7).

It comes amid riots across the country after the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport on July 29. False claims were spread online that the perpetrator was an asylum seeker, but the violence continued even after the lies were proven to be untrue.

Police have been injured, shop windows smashed and hotels housing asylum seekers targeted.

But the MP says that after speaking with the Metropolitan Police, there are “no further indications that an EDL (English Defence League) demonstration is going ahead in Harrow”.

Mr Thomas said: “Harrow Police have confirmed that extra patrols are in operation and that police are reaching out to community groups, to places of worship such as mosques ad to businesses in our community, to offer support and advice.”

He added: “Like everyone in Harrow, I am shocked and disgusted by the racist, Islamophobic actions we have seen in other parts of the country, following the horrific murders in Southport last week.”

The MP of 27 years continued that the actions of “far-right extremists” have “no place in Harrow” and added the area is blessed by its “good interfaith and cross community relations”.

A spokesperson for Harrow Council said yesterday: “We are aware of social media posts and WhatsApp messages being shared which claim that a protest is being held in Harrow on Wednesday.

"We are working with the police to verify whether a protest is taking place and if there is we will prioritise the safety of Harrow’s communities in our response.”

A Met Police spokesperson added: "We have received various reports of posts online (relating to various geographical areas of London).

"Operational colleagues are aware and will assess the information."
