THE first thing you'll notice is the makers have abandoned the old teamwork in this follow-up to the original in favour of a single man going in all guns blazing Rambo-style. They've also abandoned the old outdoor terrorist base surroundings in favour of some more built-up industrial areas hence, Urban Warfare.
The opening scene sees your man leading a Delta Force team into a building as you try and eliminate some guys for being naughty.
Unfortunately for you, the building then blows up with all your pals in it but, on the up side, you avoided the set up by being perched on top of a nearby roof with and had a good view of the fireworks.
Your man then goes off and does his job to dig out the terrorists propelled by vengeance.
It's a familiar scenario so it's not the best story in the world but quite involving and it does the job for the style of game, which, sadly, mostly comprises gung-ho action.
There are 12 fairly varied missions, but they mostly come down to shooting all the terrorists then meeting someone or stealing some papers at the end.
The game is quite short and some of the missions are not very challenging.
For instance, near the beginning there's a sub-mission where you sit with a sniper rifle looking down to the docks.
All you can move is your gunsight and basically you just move it around and shoot about eight terrorists, so what should have been one of the best bits in the game (and generally is in every other game) is quite simple and disappointing.
The game can produce some quality moments though running through with an Uzi can be challenging and propelling tear gas into a room full of terrorists is, I think, definitely cool no? The enemy do duck and pop around corners but when reloading they just stand there (just as they do if you peer round the corner), giving you easy targets.
It's not really, really bad, it just could have been better and we've seen better on the PS1. The graphics are PS1. Nuff said. Don't expect miracles because it's not going to happen.
Lighting is as good as it is going to get and it's all relatively detailed the enemy animation is fairly cool as well.
The menu screens can prove a strain though, so get your goggles out.
The backgrounds are nice but the writing is done in a neon green and at times can be too small and fuzzy to make out.
Overall, Delta Force is going to be the last half-decent shoot-em-up for the PS1 and probably the last half-decent game on it full stop.
It's got the usual PS1 shortcomings that we probably would have tolerated a few years ago, but not now.
But you can have some fun with it.
Overall: 3/5
