THIS is the game that most seasoned football sim purists will be rushing out to buy. Its predecessor Pro Evolution Soccer was acclaimed by many as the best footie sim on the PS2 market due to its tremendous playability and sharp graphics and I am pleased to say that fans of the original will not be disappointed with the follow up, Pro Evolution Soccer 2.
The opening credits are accompanied by Queen's anthem We Will Rock You and this sets the stage for some first class football action, featuring some great graphics and sounds.
The commentary, which is provided by Peter Brackley and Trevor Brooking is certainly better than in the previous version, though not particularly inspiring.
PES2 really shines once you start to play.
The controls are smooth and easy to use and once you have perfected those mazy runs and 30-yard screamers you will be on your way to lifting a virtual trophy or two.
The game comprises several modes, including a useful training session to perfect your skills and it is well worth spending some time here if you want to "bend it like Beckham", as you will need to be in top form if you want to bring success to your team.
The Master League makes a welcome return and this time there are three divisions plus transfers and a cup competition.
To get to the top here is a challenge and makes for good gameplay.
The most disappointing feature of Pro Evolution Soccer 2 is its lack of authentic team (and in some instances player) names.
Fortunately there is a very comprehensive editing mode where you can create and modify players and teams.
If you want a game that plays well and looks great then Pro Evolution Soccer 2 is just the job, but for any fans wanting some authenticity without making loads of edits then look to one of the other games on the shelf.
Overall: 4 .5/5
