LIGHTS lit up a once doomed skatepark last night as a community donned fancy dress for a Halloween “jam”.
The borough’s skaters turned out to show off tricks at Harrow Skatepark, which was once destined to be bulldozed to make way for a new leisure centre.
Organiser Nick Zorlack, head of Harrow based Death Skateboards, said: “Everyone’s really happy that the skatepark’s still here, we thought we were going to lose it.
“It’s kind of a tradition to do what we call ‘Harroween’ anyway but it’s especially good this year because everyone’s so happy we’ve still got the park.”
Skaters performed increasingly daring tricks while friends watched on and BMX riders also performed stunts.
Adam Sutcliffe, of Harrow Skatepark Users’ Group, said: “The standard’s been high. We’ve got death skateboards down so we’ve got some sponsored riders so it’s a good standard of skateboarding.”
Harrow Council’s plans for the skatepark, which is in Byron Park, would have involved knocking it down and building a replacement.
But the people who use it protested, claiming its concrete ramps and bowls are irreplaceable and saying new parks are no longer built that way.
When funding for the project recently fell through and the plans had to be scrapped Harrow’s skating community celebrated.
Mr Zorlack thanked fellow skaters who helped protest against the scheme.
