A CEREMONY was held in Stanmore yesterday to mark the start of the Jewish festival of Chanukah.
Rabbis, councillors, and members of the Jewish Community gathered outside the offices of learning disability charity Norwood, in Stanmore Broadway, to light a ceremonial menorah - a traditional eight branch candelabrum which is the symbol of Judaism.
Councillor Eric Silver, Mayor of Harrow, led the ceremony to mark the start of the Jewish festival with Rabbi Mendel Lew, of Stanmore United Synagogue, which was attended by a 70-strong crowd including residents from nearby care homes run by Norwood.
After the ceremony, traditional foods of Chanukah such as latkes and doughnuts were laid on by members of Edgware Lubavitch synagogue.
