A KENTON woman and her daughter have published a dictionary with a difference, using pictures to help define words.
Doctor Madhavi Amdekar, 44, of Aston Avenue is the principal of the Khalsa College London, a private in institution in College Road, Harrow.
She said that she had realised through her work that the use of visual aids and technology was vital, and noticed a gap in this area which she decided to fill it with the help of her 15-year-old daughter, Shachi, a pupil of St Helen's School inEastbury Road Northwood.
They worked together on 1001 Illustrated Verbs, with Shachi designing all the graphics. It took them more then two years to complete the task.
The book contains a list of verbs illustrated with cartoons for young readers and adults beginning to learn English. The verbs are given in their infinitive, present, past and past participle tenses. There are also nouns and adjectives formed from verbs.
Dr Amdekar said: "I am very happy with the book. I think it is very useful, and it is unique as it is my own style.
"The book is ideal for slow learners, people who suffer from dyslexia or for people who do not speak English as their first language."
Dr Amdekar has been principal of the college for six years and said she enjoyed teaching and watching her pupils prosper.
Shachi said: "I started drawing for the book when I was 11.
"My mum made me work all throughout my holidays and weekends for nearly two-and-half years. Sometimes I used to enjoy the task, but at times we would argue.
"I hope the readers find this book useful."
Chris McDermott, headmaster of Roxeth Manor First and Middle School in Eastcote Lane, South Harrow, helped the mother and daughter with the project and has written the foreword to the book.
He said: "I have no doubt it will help many students who are developing their knowledge and and understanding of the English language.
"It succeeds in being humorous, imaginative, helpful and informative.
"I recommend it to all."
Dr Amdekar has another daughter Shivani, 17, who also attends St Helen's.
