THE Red Army are about to invade Harrow. But before you to start worrying about a communist coup, don't panic, it's only for one night.
Moscow by Night, a variety performance showcasing all things Russian is coming to Harrow Arts Centre's Elliott Hall Theatre later this month.
However, if the thought of a variety night conjures up depressing images of Jimmy Tarbuck or Bruce Forsyth introducing a procession of talentless non-entities, think again. The Russian equivalent is the diametric opposite.
More than 40 classically trained ballet dancers, folk singers and musicians will take to the stage, bringing a slice of the Soviet to suburban Hatch End.
On September 28, the last date of their month-long British tour, singers and dancers from the illustrious Red Army ensemble, stars from Moscow Ballet's La Classique, a troupe of top gymnasts and two teams of folk musicians will entertain a fascinated Arts Centre audience.
Event director John Wray, who has worked with the group for seven years, expects a dramatic performance from his eastern friends on their final night in the country.
He said: "It should be an amazing night. The audience will be familiar with certain parts like highlights of Swan Lake by the Moscow Ballet and music by Tchaikovsky. But there will also be cossack dancing, folk music and gymnastics by Kristina Dobrikova, Marina Razzorenova and Blokhina Nataliya, who are all Russian champions.
"I've got the greatest respect for all of them. They are all so fit, professional and hard working."
The tour, which started on Monday, will take in 21 venues across the country, with performances at larger theatres as well as more intimate arenas like Elliott Hall.
Boasting such an array of talent, John has no doubts that every show will be a success. His only concern is the language barrier.
He said: "Most of the performers don't speak a word of English and my Russian is not too hot. We've got an interpreter coming over but as I'm a Geordie we'll probably need two!"
The show starts at 7.30pm on September 28. Premium seats cost £18 (£16.50) and standard seats £16 (£14.50). To book call Harrow Arts Line on 020 8428 0124.
