A BAKER got his fingers burnt when he was caught selling underweight loaves.
Mr Suleyman Cagin, 45, admitted selling loaves that breached the law. They should weight 400grammes or multiples of. Tradijg standards officers found they averaged 670 grammes 17 per cent less than they should have.
He was fined £2000 by Harrow Magistrates Court. Bill Bilon, head of Brent and Harrow Trading Standards, said that customers should get what they pay for.
He said: “In the current financial climate, particularly in light of the increasing cost of raw materials, some traders may attempt to increase their profit margins by selling underweight goods to consumers.
“This case demonstrates that business must make sure that appropriate processes and procedures are in place to avoid these types of offences from being committed.
“We will not hesitate in taking legal proceedings in cases where the interests of consumers and legitimate businesses are being harmed.”
Having pleaded guilty to all the offences Mr Cagin said the loaves were short weight because they had employed a new baker and that there had been a lack of communication between the staff on different shifts.
