ROYAL wedding enthusiasts can hold street parties without facing fees which can cost up to £1,600 after Harrow Council waved the charge.
The exemption is not just for events celebrating Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day but has been introduced in time for the occasion, which is a national public holiday.
Five events are already planned in the borough and in total 11 enquiries have been made to the council.
They include two at Whitmore Road and one each at Watersfield Way, Cranbourne Drive, Drummond Drive, Grafton Road, Farnborough Close, Tithe Farm Avenue, Wellesley Road, Tintagel Drive and Meadow Way.
Councillor Phillip O’Dell, responsible for environment and community safety at the council, said: “Whether you are looking forward to the Royal Wedding or not, street parties are a great way for the whole community to come together.
“Everyone harks back to the days of community and we are hoping through piloting this new scheme that we will provide a bit of that spirit.”
The new street party policy has been introduced on a six month trial basis.
Anyone wanting to host an event can contact the council's Traffic Management Team on 0208 424 1884 to request a form.
Applications must be made by March 31.
