THE last images of a Pakistani politician have been released by police six months after he was assassinated on his doorstep in Edgware.

Counter-terrorism detectives who are heading up the investigation of the murder of Dr Imran Farooq believe he may also have been being watched in the run-up to his death.

So far one man has been arrested but no-one has been charged in connection with the killing.

CCTV from public transport shows Dr Imran Farooq making his way home from his work in Old Street to his home in Green Lane on the evening of September 16 last year.

In the pictures the 50-year-old father-of-two can be seen in a supermarket near the pharmacy he was working in, then later walking along Station Road at 5.24pm, moments before he was butchered.

The exiled politician, a founding member of the MQM party headquartered in Edgware High Street, was repeatedly stabbed and beaten with a house brick by two men lying in wait for him at his home.

Officers say they believe Dr Farooq’s Green Court home was being watched during the day by up to four Asian men spotted in the area by neighbours, on the day of his death.

One Asian aged between 32-40 man was spotted driving a silver seven-seater people carrier with green minicab stickers in the window.

Another man police want to speak to was riding a dark coloured moped or scooter seen in Grove Road and Green Lane, and was wearing a black jacket and had the visor up on his helmet.

It is thought the scooter travelled away from the scene moments after the murder up green Lane, directly followed by the car.

Details of two kitchen knives recovered from the scene have also been released, one branded Ausbein Messer with a five inch blade and one branded Schinken Messer with a five-and-a-half-inch blade.

Both are mass-produced by the same company and available from discount stores in the same set.

Officers are looking for anyone who knows about these type of knives being bought in the days before the killing.

Barnet borough commander, Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Basu, said: “The murder of Dr Imran Farooq has caused shock and grief in the Edgware, Pakistan and Muslim communities, which is still deeply felt six months on.

"I would like to reassure those communities that specialist detectives from New Scotland Yard are making every effort to catch those responsible for the murder of Dr Imran Farooq.

“We still believe there are people out there who hold vital information that could assist the investigation and would urge them to contact the police."
