AN organisation run by the council to promote sport has been awarded by residents of South Harrow for its work.

The Harrow Sports Development Team was awarded a Contribution to Culture for their work with organisations such as national youth sports development charity StreetGames and Sports Unlimited.

The award was presented by Councillor Graham Henson, the council’s portfolio holder for performance, customer services and corporate services to the Sports Development Team.

The activities were funded by Pro Active West London and were delivered by independent sports coaches in the Rayners Lane community estate.

The organisation were also praised for their work as consultants in the development of the £2.8 million Beacon Centre Main Sports Hall and Sports Fun Zone on the estate.

Jacquie Boyce, London regional manager for StreetGames, said: “Sport has the power to transform communities.

"StreetGames helps young people in disadvantaged communities access sport regardless of circumstance, and Harrow Sports Development are a perfect example of how successfully it can be done. I’m delighted that they’ve been recognised for their efforts.”
