HARROW'S Indian population is gearing up to see their country go for glory in the final of the cricket World Cup.

Excited fans will be fighting their way into packed restaurants, bars and pubs around the borough today with all eyes on talismanic batsman Sachin Tendulkar who will be looking for his 100th century in international cricket.

India's semi-final victory against old rivals Pakistan on Wednesday sent crowds of jubilant fans pouring onto the streets and there was a spontaneous party with fireworks and flags in Queensbury Circle.

Navin Shah, London Assembly member for Brent and Harrow, said: “I watched with great interest and great joy our success on Wednesday and I shall be wearing my Indian supporter's shirt for the final.

“I'm looking forward to a day of fun and festivities. If India win it will be a remarkable achievement.

“I'm very hopeful that we will do it even given that Sri Lanka so far has had better results then India.

“I believe this is now an opportunity for India to show the world that they have the all round players that they have.

“I think to cap India's success the greatest achievement will be the 100th century of Sachin Tendulkar.”

Harrow also has a large population of Sri Lankan nationals, although many are of Tamil origin and will not be supporting the national side due to the ongoing conflict with the country's government.

Councillor Thaya Idaikkadar (Lab/Rayners Lane) said: “It's more likely they will support India – we're not ones to support our own country.”
