THE Mayor Of Harrow celebrated his year of office with a thanksgiving service in Harrow Central Mosque on Sunday.
Councillor Asad Omar thanked the community for the support shown to his charity, Ovarian Cancer Action and the Pakistan Flood Appeal with a total of £74,000 raised so far.
He said: “I consider myself to be very fortunate to be the first citizen of Harrow, a role that has taken me to 600 engagements so far and I still have 23 days to go.
"What makes me most proud is that Harrow is a borough that is so religiously diverse, yet so welcoming and inclusive.
"I have visited almost every place of worship - mosques, churches, synagogues and mandirs and I have been very well received by all.
"I was particularly impressed by the generosity and support shown to both my mayoral charity and the Pakistan Flood Appeal by the community of Harrow.
This was the first time the annual ceremony has been held in a mosque.
Cllr Omar added: "The year has gone so quickly, it seems only yesterday when I was elected as mayor. I am delighted to have my thanksgiving ceremony at Harrow Central Mosque the first service of its kind in a Harrow mosque.”
Harrow’s next Mayor will be announced on May 10.
