A club for deaf people in the borough has been shortlisted for an award in recognition of its work to encourage diversity.
Harrow Asian Deaf Club, whose 250 members meet monthly at the Bentley Day Centre in Uxbridge Road, has beaten thousands of other groups to be nominated for a National Diversity Award for its community work for the disabled.
The group has encouraged people who are not deaf, and those learning British Sign Language, to join with its events to try and create a sense of unity in the community.
Club president Asif Iqbal said: “We were shocked when we were told of this news – it’s a wonderful surprise.
“We want to say a huge thank you to all supporters who have nominated Harrow Asian Deaf Club (HADC) for this category.
“We are deeply honoured for HADC to be recognised nationally as a local community organisation that promotes diversity within local communities and opens doors to both deaf and hearing people.”
The club is up against two other community groups for the award, which will be decided at a ceremony in Manchester on September 21.
