Green-fingered enthusiasts in Harrow have been encouraged to take a rare chance to snap up a vacant allotment in the borough.

The majority of the 1,400 plots on 33 sites in Harrow have a waiting list but there are spaces at the council’s scheme in South Harrow for next season as the borough celebrates National Allotment Week.

John Salter has a patch at Newton Park East in Alexandra Avenue, and encouraged others to get involved.

He said: “Allotments are such a valuable resource that give people the space to pursue their passions.

“They offer plenty of fresh air and exercise plus the benefit of one's efforts in the way of fresh fruit and vegetables.

“Local horticultural societies such as the one at Newton Park have a fantastic trading shed providing seeds and composts and are a focus for social activities such as shows, BBQs and outings.”

It costs approximately £30 per year to rent a five pole plot from Harrow Council, and portfolio holder for environment, Councillor Phillip O’Dell, said it was rare for a London borough to be able to open some up to new applicants.

He said: “Our allotment patches are always in high demand, but unlike other boroughs where waiting lists have closed to new applicants, there is still a limited number available to support new growers and gardeners.

“They are not only helping the environment, but also benefiting from fresh, healthy produce.”
