A post box, cars, and a road sign have all been spray painted gold in Rayners Lane in an apparent copycat of Royal Mail’s Olympic Team GB gold medal celebrations.
Vandals carried out the damage in an early-morning run along the road at approximately 3.20am last Wednesday morning, according to CCTV footage collected by one of the people living in the street.
The front passenger window of a 55-year-old woman’s maroon Ford Focus and the bonnet of a 36-year-old man’s black Volkswagen Golf, which was parked on his driveway, were amongst the targets.
And the post box, near the junction with Alexandra Avenue, was given a lick of gold paint in an apparent copy of Royal Mail’s work to recognise British Olympic champions’ achievements by painting hometown post boxes gold.
It is one of a spate of cases across the country where post boxes have been given an impromptu redecoration – some by frustrated residents who feel their town should have been recognised and some by vandals.
John Evans, who is the designated Street Champion of the road, said several neighbours had called him to report the damage.
He said: “Already our community policeman has been to speak to some of the victims.
“This activity is going to cost the victims a lot of money they can ill afford.”
No arrests have been made over the vandalism.
