A fuel-stealing driver who ran over a Kingsbury petrol station attendant so badly his leg had to be amputated has been jailed for 13 years.
Billal Shah, 28, of Kenley Avenue, Colindale, left the worker “for dead” after running him over outside the Total garage in Kenton Road on March 4 when attempting to flee with fuel he tried to pay for on a fraudulent credit card.
The 27-year-old victim was found 150 metres away in Preston Hill with life-threatening injuries and was flown to hospital where he was unconscious for weeks, while his leg was amputated and pelvis reconstructed.
Shah had arrived at the station in his grey Nissan Micra minutes earlier and filled up with £55 worth of petrol.
And when he tried to pay fraudulently with a credit card in another name and was declined, he left an IOU with false details before being asked by the cashier to leave his tax disc and go home to get the owed money.
Suspecting Shah may flee, the cashier ran out onto the forecourt and chased after him, but Shah drove off at speed. The seriously injured victim was found lying in the street moments later.
Detective Constable Savi Arora, of Brent Violent Crime Unit, said: “The victim was left for dead and it is incredible he survived. He remains in hospital five-and-a-half months later.
“The assault has had life-changing consequences for him and no sentence will compensate for the injuries the victim will have to live with for the rest of his life, but I hope it offers some reassurance that the defendant is being punished for the crime.”
Police arrested Shah 11 days after the incident and prosecuted him. At Harrow Crown Court on August 17, he was sentenced to 13 years in jail after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm.
He was also handed a one-year sentence for dangerous driving, and six months in prison for three counts of fraud, to be served concurrently.
