Wealdstone manager Gordon Bartlett intends to keep the nucleus of their promotion winning squad together but is uncertain if he will be able to keep Scott McGleish and Glen Little next season.

Veteran striker McGleish came close to landing the Enfield Town job last year and is keen to move into management.

Bartlett hopes to hold on to the former Leyton Orient striker but admits it could be difficult if a managerial vacancy comes up.

Former Reading winger Little also played a key role in helping the Stones to the Ryman Premier title but the 38-year-old’s future at the club is up in the air.

Bartlett said: “I would expect the majority of the squad to still be here. I would like most people to be around and I would like Scott and Glen to still be involved but it’s a decision they have to make.

“It’s no secret Scott wants to be a manager and for Glen it’s about how he feels going into next season. They have both been major assets and have had a massive influence not just on the pitch but in the changing room. They have delivered under pressure.”

Wealdstone face a new challenge in the Conference South next season and the manager hopes to make some additions to the squad sooner rather than later.

Bartlett said: “It’s going to be a new challenge. There’s already been lots of phone calls. Most people think this is a rest time but it’s probably the busiest time of the year in terms of talking to players.”

He added: “There are an awful lot of players available after being released by professional clubs and the next two months are going to be very important.

“I’m expecting it to be pretty busy and it’s important that we talk and lay the foundations on board.

“The next two months are extremely important for what happens in the second week of August.

“I would like to keep the nucleus of the squad together but we also need to make good additions. We have to make sure we’re ready for a much harder campaign next year.

“We have to set our stall out a little bit higher. This is a new environment and we’re going into the unknown because we haven’t played in the Conference South before.”

The Stones signed off the season in style with a glittering champagne reception at the club on Sunday night.

More than 100 people attended and partipated in a question and answer session with Bartlett and chairman Howard Krais.

A special ‘Oscar’ award was presented to Little for his memorable solo goal during the 4-1 win at Dulwich Hamlet.
